SmartOffice uses Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) technology.
‘Voice over Internet Protocol’ is using your phone over a secure data connection.
Internet Protocol (IP) is the convention that allows voice communication over data connections.

A major benefit of VoIP is the significant reductions it can drive into your total communication costs, eliminating the need for regular phone lines by utilising your data network for voice and data communications.
Compass uses its own New Zealand wide network to provide secure transmission of all your voice and data traffic.
What you need to know about VoIP
Compass provides a high quality, dedicated and reliable VoIP network. However there are various factors that may affect VoIP phone services. You need to be aware of these factors and how Compass proactively provides solutions, whereas other providers may not.
It is easy to confuse VoIP services with other similar Internet based voice services such as Skype or Gizmo. These services use public non-secure Internet, whereas Compass VoIP uses reliable dedicated data lines for our services. We know exactly how your voice traffic is routed at every step of the process.

Power outages
Similar to cordless phones or phones with external power requirements, VoIP requires a constant power supply in order to operate. That is why Compass provides a UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) that provides power for a set amount of time during any power outages. (note: long term power outages are not catered for).
Directory
Compass provides full access to directory assistance and any other services such as international directory assistance.
Number Listings
As part of our service you are listed in the white pages as well as 018 directory assistance.
Switching numbers
When you join Compass you can keep existing phone numbers or take on new numbers. In the highly unlikely scenario of you ever leaving Compass you take all your phone numbers with you.
